In the 2023-2024 school year, all Tulsa Public Schools high school sites will administer the Civics Knowledge Assessment to 9th grade students in the fall semester (no later than December 15, 2023) and spring semester (no later than May 17, 2024, for students who have not met the requirement). Students with disabilities who are assessed through the Oklahoma Alternate Assessment Program (OAAP) are exempt from this requirement.   

In accordance with state law, students are required to earn a passing score of 60 out of 100 questions on the Civics Knowledge Assessment, adapted from the United States 2008 naturalization test, to graduate high school. 

How will the assessment be administered? 

Social studies teachers will administer the assessment. For most students, it will be administered via Google Form so that it can be immediately graded. The assessment is available digitally in English and Spanish. Paper versions are available in the following languages (as well as in English and Spanish): Vietnamese, Arabic, Tagalog, Hmong, Pashto, Dari, Chuukese, Marshallese, and German. Students may NOT use cell phones, notes, books, or have any cheat sheets available to assist them in taking the assessment.

What study resources are available for the assessment?

Many of the questions on the assessment appear in the Oklahoma State Standards for K-12 social studies. Study guides, lesson plans with in-class activities, and practice assessments are available.

Social studies teachers will prepare students for the assessment. Students and families are also encouraged to access study materials and resources. They are available here.

When will students take the assessment?

All 9th grade students will take the assessment in the fall semester before December 15th. Individual school sites are responsible for creating a testing plan that works best for them. For questions, please contact your student’s high school guidance counselor.

What happens if a student is absent on test day or does not receive a passing score?

School sites will have a plan to administer make up assessments to students who still need the requirement. Students are allowed unlimited make up assessments until they receive a passing score.
